Plot synopsis: The Merry Gentleman is a morally ambiguous story. Kate flees her abusive policeman husband, moving to a large city in another country. In the new situation she becomes the object of desire for several men, all of them also flawed and struggling to find their way. She is treated most kindly by a hired killer, Frank, whose depression with his choice of profession is rendering him vulnerable and dangerous, both to himself and to those who become emotionally attached to him. When she meets Frank, they discover unexpected satisfaction in their shared silences. Frank has found a kindred spirit in the young woman, but their mutual search for redemption and renewal is challenged by the lives they left behind. As their stories unfold, Frank is forced to own up to what he has become, and Kate must develop an inner strength in order to survive.
